A morning on the Penitente
On arrival at the lodge for the first time, Patagonian sea-trout veteran Lawson Jones grinned approvingly at his first impression of the new operations at Rincon. After hearing so much about it, he had finally arrived. After refreshments, and a guided tour of his new surroundings for the coming days, its time to pull on the waders and try a few casts before supper.
Its getting late in the season, now, and the early days of April have brought a significant drop in temperatures, but with a keen optimism, Lawson sets off to the river with guide Chizo Arias.
Within no time of arrival at the Bridge Pool, Lawson is into nice fish which is eventually landed, and tips the scales at a respectable 12lbs, not bad for openers! After the safe release of the spirited fish, the pair decide to take a short coffee break, during which time Lawson invites his guide and friend of many years, Chizo, to try a few casts………..big mistake ! Within minutes, Chizo is into a good fish, and it’s big! The fish puts up a good scrap and after 20 minutes of high anxiety, and much acrobatics, the fish is eventually landed, weighing in at just over 20 lbs.Lawson decides, from now on, to be a bit more cautious about inviting his pal to have a cast or two!
That evening the two friends enjoy a traditional “Asado” served at the lodge in the company of other guests and staff members.
The next morning Lawson is met by Diego Peralta for a specially guided tour of the new operation, in particular to be shown some of the water at Rincon’s “jewel in the crown”, the Penitente river. First pool of the day is Topo, a short distance from the house.
First cast, and fish on !…..then off ! Second cast, and a lively brown trout of 5 lbs is eventually brought to the net. Returning to the pool, and a few casts later and the line tightens ……..he’s in again! This time it’s a better fish, a fresh run sea-trout of 10 lbs. After the safe return Lawson comments what fun it is to play such a good fish on a 7 wt. single handed rod, but this is the ideal tool for the Penitente river.
Now it’s time to really see the diversity of what’s on offer at Rincon, so the decision is made to visit some of the higher pools in the system, still within the ownership of the Estancia, but close to the Chilean border.
First stop is the pool “Black”, where a nice brown trout of 6 lbs is landed, then onto “Banduria Island” , this time it’s a 4 lb brownie soon to be followed by a fresh run sea-trout. of 7 lbs
Diego turns to Lawson and comments “not bad for river you’ve probably never even heard of !”
Next pool ?……………….
